Something to Think About
"But when He comes, the Spirit of truth, He will guide you to all truth… 'the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…if we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.'"
The great day of Pentecost found pilgrims from all places gathered in Jerusalem for the Jewish feast. The first followers of Jesus were there too, as Jesus had instructed them to 'wait in the city until the Spirit comes.' The events of that holyday changed the world forever.
The signs of tongues of fire, the roar of the wind and the babbling in many languages were manifestations of the coming of the Spirit to change lives, to change hearts, to change the world, to make people one. The gift of the presence of the Holy Spirit did this beginning that day.
We live in a time of a new Pentecost, when the fruits of the Spirit's presence in our lives replace the fire, winds, and words. As John Paul called us to a new evangelization he spoke of a new ardor, enthusiasm, and methods, what an equation!
Reread the nine fruits enumerated above. Look into your own heart to see which of these stand out. Consider some family member or friend. Which one or ones seem best to reflect their living. If some are missing in your own life, ask the Spirit to bring them to life in you.
